Robert obtained his law degree from the University of Calgary. Following his admission to the bar, he took a position with Alberta Justice as a Crown Prosecutor. As a front-line prosecutor, Robert was in court daily, which provided him a great deal of courtroom experience. In his time with Alberta Justice he prosecuted individuals charged with offences ranging from shoplifting to homicide.
After many years with Crown’s office, Robert made the decision to move to defence work. After opening his own firm in the 1990’s, Robert has successfully acted for thousands of Albertans charged with Criminal Code offences. His efforts in the courtroom as well as the community resulted in him being awarded the esteemed Queen’s Counsel designation. First meeting in 2009, Robert and James founded Batting, Wyman Barristers, a firm devoted to the highest caliber of criminal representation. After a long and successful partnership, James has assumed conduct of the practice.
Bob now splits time in Calgary, Palm Springs and Sicamous where he can be found fine tuning his golf game.
Originally from central Alberta, James has long since called Calgary home. His practice is devoted entirely to the defence of individuals prosecuted under the Criminal Code. In his career, he has appeared as counsel in all levels of court within the province of Alberta as well as at the Supreme Court of Canada. He has successfully represented people from all walks of life, including investment bankers, lawyers, and professional athletes. Referrals form a large component of James’ practice, with individuals being referred by past clients, other lawyers, and even the occasional judge.
James does not shy away from difficult cases and has experience representing individuals charged with the most serious of criminal offences. He has acted as counsel for clients charged with sexual assault, impaired driving causing death, and murder, with many of his cases receiving coverage in the media. His practice has taken him to numerous provinces as well into the United States.
When not in the office, James will likely be found on a snowboard, golf course or spending time with his family.
Being charged with a criminal offence is a life altering experience, especially so for the vast majority of our clients who have never been involved with the criminal justice system. Given their inexperience, they are often in crisis and require guidance as to what must occur next. We firmly believe that it is the role of the defence lawyer to shoulder the load for the client and take control of the situation. From the outset, our office will familiarize ourself with the case and put together a comprehensive strategy going forward. Unlike many criminal defence offices, we limit the number of clients we take on at any given time. By doing so, we are perpetually available to answer any questions that may arise during the course of our representation. This approach is preferable as questions will undoubtedly arise along the way.
Our firm’s values are reflected in our courtroom capabilities. We deliver unparalleled trial counsel versed in the conduct of serious prosecutions. We want our clients to feel confident that their case is in the most capable hands, even when stakes are undoubtedly high.
