Criminal law in the time of COVID-19

Criminal law and COVID 19

Have you been recently charged with an offence and don’t know what your current options are due to the pandemic? Rest assured, our office is still open and able to help you navigate any criminal charges you are facing. We have been deemed an essential service and thus are available to assist you in these trying times.

Currently, we are able to do many of our consults and even court appearances virtually, in order to limit any potential exposure. Our office is easily accessible by phone or email if you are not comfortable with in-person meetings at this point in time.

Within our office, there have been some adjustments made with your safety in mind. Should you need to come to our office, we have installed plexiglass barriers at our front desk and all office staff, as well as lawyers, will be wearing masks as mandated by the government.

We have a large conference room that allows for social distancing during any in-office conferences. We provide an initial consultation free of charge, and for your convenience, any payments can also be made contact-less by way of electronic transfer or credit/debit card.

If you need to attend court in person, masks are also required within the courthouse. We work very closely with the Crown prosecutor’s office, and will often resolve cases in a way that gets you the best possible outcome, and potentially eliminates your need to step into a courtroom.

The appearance of COVID-19 has encouraged the justice system to adapt to a more technology-based way of communicating, and many cases are now able to be dealt with via phone, video conference or email for everyone’s safety and convenience. Due to concerns about outbreaks that have or could occur within remand centres, it is likely more now than ever that depending on your specific set of circumstances we can avoid jail time if reasonable.

If you are in need of a criminal defence lawyer, we are here, and easily accessible in whichever way you choose.

Reasons to Hire a criminal defence lawyer

Why should you hire a criminal defence lawyer? Here are some of the most important reasons:

1. Criminal law is complicated. Criminal defence law is a specialty, this type of lawyer deals only with criminal charges and can help you navigate the complexities of the criminal justice system. Defence attorneys have an advanced level of knowledge and skill from years spent studying and practicing criminal law.

They have likely dealt with cases similar to yours in the past and can use that knowledge to best defend you in court. An experienced criminal defence lawyer has the ability to look through your case and see if any weaknesses or errors in procedure have occurred which could result in your charges being dismissed.

2. A criminal defence lawyer has a relationship with the court. Criminal lawyers work closely with Crown prosecutors to determine the appropriate resolution to each case presented to them. They regularly appear in court in front of a Justice to argue cases, and as such develop relationships and knowledge of what to expect from each Crown prosecutor and Justice that they deal with on a regular basis.

They are knowledgeable about court procedures and the rules and regulations that are to be followed. Hiring a criminal defence lawyer with a solid reputation in court can increase your chances of a favourable result.

3. It’s a stressful time. Often it is a person’s first experience with the Justice system, and it can be confusing and overwhelming. Any mistake you make can have serious consequences for your future. Hiring a criminal lawyer is well worth the peace of mind of having a qualified professional on your side to guide you through the process.

4. The stakes are high. A criminal conviction can cost you your job, your license to drive, thousands of dollars in fines, and even your freedom if you are required to spend time in custody. A criminal defence lawyer works with you and will attempt to resolve your case without you having a criminal record.

They can often find a way to reduce any penalties you may face by way of creative sentencing options that may involve counselling, alternative measures program, or a peace bond for example. Obtaining the best possible resolution for you is always the criminal defence lawyer’s goal, and they have the knowledge and expertise to do so.

If you find yourself in a situation where you are facing criminal charges, I highly recommend you speak to a criminal defence lawyer as soon as possible.
