First of all, you are under no obligation to provide a statement to the police, no matter how many times they try to get you to. It can be difficult to stay silent if you want to explain your side of things, and the officers can be persistent, but it’s actually to your advantage to say nothing at all. That is the number one thing I tell my clients when they are placed under arrest. The phrase “anything you say can and will be used against you” is absolutely true, so it is to your advantage to keep quiet. You have a right to silence, and a right to obtain counsel which you should absolutely take advantage of.
